The Department of Tourism Studies, formerly known as the Tourism Unit has the main aim of teaching tourism studies at Tertiary Level at the University of Malta.
Set up in 1995, the Department has been responsible mainly for training people in tourism, heritage management, cultural issues and socio-economic impacts of Tourism. Over the years the Department of Tourism Studies has also been active in research and its members have assisted the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry for Culture in developing a sustainable tourism product. The current team of lecturers and researchers are involved in cultural heritage, cultural routes, cultural products, media and arts, tourism SMEs, tourism employment issues, labour studies, island sustainability and tourism economics.
The Department is also active in EU funded projects and has participated in the EUROMED heritage II programme with two major projects on cultural heritage, namely MED Voices and DELTA. Currently the Department is participating in a Leonardo da Vinci Pilot Project, VOCMAT. Other programmes that the Department is active are Marie Curie, and Life Long Learning programme In addition, the Department is also very active in the ERASMUS programme and has agreements with the Universities in the UK, France, Finland and Germany.
The Department works closely with local tourism stakeholders such as hotels, restaurants, respective ministries, heritage agencies and craft organisations. It is also a member of AIEST, EUTO and Tourism Networks.
VocMat and the University of Malta
The University of Malta sat on the VocMat Management and Research & Development Groups.
