Research and Consultancy

We have a renowned Centre for International Tourism Research (CITouR)
http://www.shu.ac.uk/research/citour/

The ambition for CITouR is to focus on research, consultancy and training that makes a real difference to communities, tourists and people working in the tourism industry.

CITouR has recently carried out research and consultancy projects in countries as diverse as Tanzania, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Vanuata and of course the UK. Themes of these projects include the Integration of migrant workers into the Tourism and Hospitality workforce, Pro-poor tourism initiatives and TICOS – a major carbon offset scheme for UK tour operators. The work undertaken feeds back into our teaching, ensuring that students gain cutting edge knowledge of academic and applied tourism research. In the last national research exercise we achieved a grade 4 (out of 5) – one of the top scores for a group of its size in the country.

Industry links also form a substantial element of the work of the centre. We have extensive experience of distance learning (DL), particularly at postgraduate level. This has been enhanced and developed through the close links with the Tourism Management Institute (TMI). We also have close links with the industry and recognise the need for training and development of professional managers in the sector, but also understand the heavy demands of these roles and the constraints on available time for such development. SHU is therefore delighted to have been involved in the VocMat project from its initial development.

VocMat and Sheffield Hallam University

The VocMat project was designed to meet these needs with its' innovative flexibility in delivery and therefore allows for the dissemination of knowledge, skills and best practice to meet a wider range of professionals. These are aims that SHU were and are keen to be part of.
